Recently there’s been a lot of discussion of Amazon Kindle’s latest program… “Kindle Unlimited”.

Now for those of you have heard but don’t know a lot about it, here’s a quick recap in a nutshell.

*Remember: this is only a brief overview and not an in-depth piece.  I understand there are still some details to be ironed out*

With Kindle Unlimited, you pay $9.99 a month to have unlimited access to Kindle books through Amazon.  You don’t have to ‘buy’ the books, you simply have access to them.  Sort of like a private library that you pay a monthly fee to have access to.  Now considering there are literally thousands of books on Kindle this is a pretty good deal for consumers.  You can sample and read any the books and decide if you actually want to purchase a copy for yourself in e-book or maybe go for an actual print copy, without wondering whether or not the book is to your taste.

So on the surface, this sounds pretty good right?  So how does this effect the authors?  What do they get out of having their books being ‘borrowed’ instead of bought?

Well, Amazon has a plan in place for there.  Should anyone ‘borrow’ your book and read at least 10% of it, whether or not the person finishes the book, the author will earn a paid share.  So they are getting something for their trouble even if the entire book is not read or purchased.  Nice right?  They will get something just for having their book looked at (provided at least 10% of the book is sampled).

So this sounds like a nice win-win situation for all.  Unfortunately, there is a catch (yeah, you all saw that coming didn’t you?).

In order for an author’s book(s) to be part of the Kindle Unlimited program, the e-book version of their book CANNOT be for sale anywhere else.  Meaning, no Nook, Apple, Sony, or other e-reader formats through Smashwords, Scribd, Oyster, etc.  Amazon and Kindle will have the SOLE selling rights to the e-book form of your work.  Print editions are of course unaffected by this.

So basically, an author has to choose to either pull their existing works from Smashwords and  the other e-book formats, and have only the Kindle version of their e-book available.  Or, in the case of a brand new book, it will only be allowed to exist in print or Kindle form.

Speaking only for myself…

I am not going to do Kindle Unlimited or Kindle Select.  Some time back, I pulled my first novel from Smashwords and did the Kindle Select which also requires exclusivity and only had the Kindle e-book form available for three months.  I did it because this was the only way I could do ‘Free-Days’ through Amazon, which was important to me since it was my first novel.  Those Free-Days got my name and work into the hands of over 1000 prospective readers.  But I had to cut my Nook, Apple and Sony fans off for three months, which I hated doing.

When I released my 2nd novel “THE SHIP” I made it clear from the start that there would be no Free-Days, only “99 Cent Days” occasionally and that was it.  And I’m sticking to my guns.  99 cents is the lowest I can go on Kindle without being part of either one of the their programs.  “THE SHIP” is doing nicely, and I’ve also found that a number of people have told me flat out that they prefer paying the full price when they have the money, because they love what I’ve created and want to see the money go to me and not some corporation.

With loyalty like that, I can’t bring myself to cut anyone off.  So, I’m sticking with Smashwords and Amazon (no strings attached) for all my e-book formats.  What others choose to do, is up to them.  I simply wanted to take this moment to assure all my readers that I will always put my books out there in all the e-book formats so I can make sure it’s available to you.

Here’s the address to my author website which has links to all the e-book formats for both my books.  Just click on it, and it will take you to the site and you can choose whatever format you prefer.  You will always have a choice with me, it’s my way of returning the faith and loyalty all of you have shown my by taking a chance on my books.

I’m looking for honest reviews for my new paranormal/mystery novel “THE SHIP”.

So far I’ve had 4 reviews on Amazon (all of them 5 star ratings), but I’ve only had one on Smashwords and over at Goodreads.com.  I really would like to see more, since most prospective readers like to see what others are saying about a new book.

So, in order to get them I’m offering 5 free E-Book copies through Smashwords. You’ll be able to get your copy via a coupon I code I will be supplying any volunteers with.

For those who are not completely familiar with Smashwords, they have the following e-book formats avialable: (Nook, Kindle, Apple, Sony, and PDF). You’ll have 1 month to read the book and provide a review on Smashwords and if you happen to have a Goodreads account, I would love to see it posted there as well.

Take care and keep writing.

What is a Proof Copy?

On the surface it seems to simply be a regular printed copy of your book.  Nothing more, nothing less.  But when you look at the final page…

Okay?  So it has “PROOF” printed on the very last page, so what?

That one word let’s you know that you are holding an uncorrected, unedited version of a book. These are what come before even a 1st Edition of a book is created.  Before electronic books, Proof Copies (also known as Galley Copies) were what publishers would create and send out to the editing staff for corrections and proofreading.

These copies were also referred to as “Advanced Copies” and would be sent out to critics and advertisers in advance to get them fired up about the upcoming final version of a book.  The critics and company would build hype for the novel before it was released thus getting the readers anxious for the release date.

However, with Indie Publishers like Smashwords, Createspace and others, are Proof Copies even worthwhile anymore?  Do they serve any purpose?

In my opinion the answer is a resounding “YES!”

Sorry for the shout there, but this is a subject I feel is important.  First off, I will tell you right now that if you work with Kindle, Smashwords, or Createspace you will have a chance to look over your entire book right there on your computer so you can look for issues.  Basically you have an e-proof copy available.

So shouldn’t that be enough?  I cannot speak for everyone else, only myself.  But in my case I would much rather have both the E-Proof AND the printed Proof Copy to look over.  Why?  Simply because, even when reading one word at a time on the computer, errors still slip past me.  I only found them when I was actually reading the printed book.  My eyes tend to fill in or glance over problems when I’m looking at a computer screen.  These errors even got past half a dozen Beta-Readers who had the electronic version of the book.

So, for me, having a printed Proof Copy is simply another extra tool in my arsenal.  It only costs a few dollars to get one done on Createspace and to me it was totally worth it.

In the end it’s up to the individual author what they want to do.  I’ve simply shared my experience and why I find them useful.  What are some of your experiences?  I’m sure me and the other readers will find various points of view quite useful.  Leave your thoughts in the comments below and thanks for reading.

Until next time, take care everyone and keep writing.

WELCOME TO THE PARA-EARTH SERIES…

When I began writing  I wanted to create something new and different.  Something that could become an ongoing seriese, with recurring and new characters that would take the reader’s imagination to new places and introduce new concepts.  The result was the Para-Earth Series:  a unique blend of horror, paranormal mystery, with a science-fiction twist that would make the Twilight Zone proud.

Through these tales, I introduce both my characters and the audience to a whole new vision of Parallel Earths unlike anything you’ve seen before.  I hope you’ll join me on this journey as together we discover beings and realities found only in dreams.  The door is open and you are always welcome…

Sorry for the lack of posts lately.  After lining up my Beta-Readers, the allergy season kicked into unbelievably high gear and knocked the breath out of me literally!  What energies I’ve had have been dedicated to working on The Vampyre Blogs novel itself and formatting “THE SHIP” to be ready to go to Smashwords, Kindle and Createspace once I hear back from my beta-readers and make a few changes to the manuscript.

This brings me to today’s topic.  Formatting your book to go to press through these three outlets can be trying at times.  I’ve only had to go through it once so far and that was a little over a year ago when I published “THE BRIDGE”.  Luckily, I did remember a lot of what I learned back then for dealing with Kindle and Createspace.  Smashwords is taking a little more effort and I will address that topic in another entry very soon.

Today, I want to focus on a shortcut I’ve discovered that has made my formatting efforts for Createspace and Kindle go much faster and easier.  When you use Createspace you tell the system what size of paperback book you want to make.  In my case I’m partial to the 6″ x 9″ Trade Paperback size.  I know my books are long to begin with and want the reader to get their money’s worth when they buy the paperback version of my work.

So, I told the system what I wanted and it gave me a template (HALLELUJAH!) to follow.  This template is blank and contains a number of things I’d never thought about before.  Things like:

1-A Title Page

2-Copyright Page

3-Acknowledgement Page

4-Dedication Page

5-Table of Contents

6-About the Author

All of these things are not always necessary for your book, but is advisable to protect your rights and to make things nicer for your readers.  And of course dedicating and saying thank you to those who had your back while you worked on your masterpiece.  But when you’re writing the story itself you don’t think about these things.  You’re focused on telling that story.  These things only come after you’re done.  But when you  are done, do you know how to create these pages?  How much spacing to use?  What order they go in?  Where on the page to put them so they look professional?

For me the answer was a big NO!  I hadn’t the first clue, so when I opted to download that template guess what was waiting for me, all set and ready to be filled in?  All of those little things.  But that was just the beginning.

How the paragraphs and my sentences lined up within the book itself was another issue.  Because each book is a different length, do you know how to line up your paragraphs on the pages so that none of the words get lost down where the binding meets?  How do you know that your paragraphs will line up on the opposite pages and look neat and professional?

I didn’t, but the template took care of that for me to.  The first time I did things I had to learn to redo my indentations and fix the paragraphs, adjust the margins etc. manually.  But this time I used the template and everything went much smoother this time.  To make life easier for myself in the future I SAVED the blank template as just that and then made a copy of it which I inserted “THE SHIP” into.

I then took the blank template and copied it again and started writing my third novel directly into it.  This way there will be no question about whether or not it will fit Createspace’s format guideline.  Plus, I get a sneak preview of what it’s going to look like in actual book form.

Another little benefit to using their templates is that Createspace does have an option that once your print-book form is ready to go, they can forward the file to Kindle and get in e-book format for you using the same template.  You can also submit to Kindle directly on your own through Amazon KDP, which is what I’m doing.  I only made a few changes such as removing the page numbers and headers found at the top of the pages since they don’t work on Kindle and just make a mess.

I’ve already pre-submitted what I’ve done and saw that indeed, in both cases, everything is lining up neatly.  I discovered after the fact that “THE BRIDGE” was messed up as far as paragraphs not lining up in the Kindle format.  I’ve taken it down for now and am making changes to correct that issue and will put it back up on Kindle just before “THE SHIP” comes out.

I’m really finding using Createspace’s template a real time saver and a good reminder of little details that need to be addressed when you’re going the Indie Publishing route.  I strongly advise others to check out their templates and use them.  They may save you a lot of time and frustration down the road.

I’ll keep you posted on how things go when I actually submit everything for final review.  And as promised, I will do a post about Smashwords guidelines and any templates I can locate.  Each system is a little different, you CANNOT use the Createspace or Kindle templates for Smashwords.  So stay tuned and until next time, keep writing.
