We’re going to continue our discussion about adventures with computers.

When last I posted, I had just finished telling you all about the events involving the death of my little blue laptop and our desktop, and how we had just gotten around replacing them with refurbished computers.  In both cases, neither the new laptop nor the desktop had MS Office which meant no word processing program, excel, etc.  And since we were still on a budget purchasing would be more than a minor inconvenience at this point.  So what to do?

Well, Helen had told me about WPS Office, a system that she had downloaded onto her laptop a year ago which is fully compatible with MS Office while costing $0.00 to download.  There is one caveat however, every time you open a file in WPS Office you have to put up with a 5 second ad before proceeding.  Right off the bat I was like, “I can handle a 5 second ad, and if that’s all sign me up.”  But then a second thought occurred to me.   How how well would the files from that system would work for submitting finished books and stories to Createspace and Smashwords.

Both of those publishing systems have strict and specific submission guidelines, for those who haven’t used either yet.  In the case of Createspace, they insist on submissions being in PDF so right there I had a major concern.  However, my worries were quickly relieved when I saw that as part of their Word Processing program, there is an option to save your work as a PDF.  This was a big relief.  Furthermore, you can also save your documents as Word .doc or .docx.  Word .doc is the big requirement for Smashwords, so again a big plus.  And of course the price was right, so I went ahead and downloaded the system.

Navigating WPS Word is very easy.  The layout is very similar to the MS Word program most of us are already familiar with.

Your cut/paste, fonts, sizing, and other favorites are all there at the top just as usual.  The exact order they appear may not be identical but a minimum of patience is all that I found to be needed.   You’ll also find your little symbol buttons for save, print, go back, go forward, available as well.  Of course, to save your file in a specific format you’ll need to click on the W Writer box and select Save As… which will give you a number of options including Export to PDF, MS Word .doc, MS Word .dot, and MS Word .docx.  Which basically covers your submission needs for both Createspace and Smashwords, as I explained earlier.

The system is nearly identical to MS Office in all the respects for my needs.  Someone else may have encountered issues I’m not aware of, if you have and are reading this please share those concerns with the rest of us down in the comments section.  The reason I put this blog together to share personal knowledge and experiences in my writing journey, not just mine but yours as well my friends.  So please don’t hesitate to share yours or even some concerns you may have.  If I don’t know the answer, chances are another reader might have it.

Now as for the other programs offered under WPS Office, I haven’t worked with many of them yet but Helen has with great success.  From what she’s told me the spreadsheet and Powerpoint are on par with MS 365 Office.  If you choose to go for the WPS Office remember you can download the free version which also comes with 1 GB of Cloud space, or you can upgrade to Premium (which removes ads) has advanced features, including document collaboration.  There is also a Professional Version and a Student Version.  I don’t know too much about those last two versions so I cannot say much about them.  As I said earlier I myself stuck to the free download which is serving me just fine as I already share collaboration documents through Google Docs, and of course have Cloud storage space there.  So if you find yourself in a situation like mine, hopefully this is a viable alternative for you.  I still love MS Office, but until I get some other things taken care of like dental work, I have to watch my pennies for a while

Regardless of what Office system you use, remember to back-up your files.  I do so on Google Docs, Cloud, and on Flash Drives.  You never can have too much back-up for your work!  All of these saved hours and months of writing projects when my laptop and desktop died, I didn’t lose a single sentence, word or period.

I want to finish by saying I haven’t actually submitted anything to Createspace or Smashwords since starting with the WPS Office system, but trial runs where I submit a file to get a preview on Createspace has met with the same success I’ve experienced using MS Office.  Once our latest project “The Vampyre Blogs – One Day At A Time” is submitted, I’ll let you all know how things went.

Until then, use whatever you feel comfortable with as far as “Office” systems go.  If you’re on a budget like me, I think you will be rather pleased with trying WPS Office.  You can find it by simply Googling WPS Office.

That’s all I have for now.  Until next time, take care and keep writing.

“Favorite read this summer”

BySimoneon August 16, 2017
Format: Kindle Edition

Favorite read this summer! Filled with murder mysteries and British wittiness that kept me laughing all throughout the adventure. Haven’t found a book with good dialogue and a sense of humor for a while.

Overall, I’m pleased with the mix of romance + adventure + mystique put together in ‘The Bridge’.

Happy to see that there are writers who still put so much time and effort in to character development and story.

For those of you who didn’t know, I run another blog called “The Vampyre Blogs – Private Edition” which just passed the 10,000 view mark!

Here’s the link for anyone who’d like to check it out:  http://thevampyreblogs.blogspot.com/

I started this blog with the sole purpose of introducing the idea of a science-fiction vampyre who was truly similiar to the traditional vampires of lore. Nathan tries to avoid sunlight (although he can step out on cloudy and rainy days, and can actually walk in the light but only if he’s loaded up on blood in advance since sunlight can dry him out to the point of becoming dust). He sleeps in the ground (because certain nutrients his body needs can only be absorbed from there). And he can shape-shift becoming a horde of rats, bats, dogs, mist, grow wings… but is restricted to how big he can do these things. He cannot make more than what there is of his physical being (law of mass). And of course, he is extremely long-lived.

The blog has been chronicling short stories about his long life and some of the people he has met over the last 150 years such as Mae West

the Marx Brothers,

Silent film stars like Roscoe “Fatty” Arbuckle and Buster Keaton

Ballroom dancer turned heart-throb Rudolph Valentino

And many others he worked with in Vaudeville before they became movie stars, along with others whose lives he’s touched such as victims of the Nazi Holocaust and simple everyday people. There are also entries from the supporting cast who allow you to see Nathan through their eyes. Their stories show many sides to him and why he has come to be a guardian angel who has watched over not only them but in some cases their parents, grandparents.

To date there are over 41 short and somewhat longer stories on the blog, with many more to come. I plan on bundling some of the stories next Christmas as an anthology, since there are so many entries on the blog for people to wade through these days.

In the meantime, please share the blog link with everyone you know and then help them to check out Nathan’s first full-length novel story “The Vampyre Blogs – Coming Home” where he comes back to his hometown Pointer, West Virginia. He has come back many times but this time its to stay to save the manor he called home from the wrecking ball, as well as the 1000 acres of pristine land which would fall prey to ruthless lumber companies and coal mining corporations.

Its a lonely homecoming, as far as he knows, but someone has been waiting for him to come back. Someone who saw him leave to fight in the Civil War back in 1862 and a year later died in his arms shortly after his transformation which occurred in a Para-Earth where he encountered two strange lifeforms. One which kept him alive, while the other wanted him destroyed… and still does. In fact, the latter has found its way into this reality and is now closing in on Pointer to finish him off once and for all for he’s the only force that can keep it from absorbing all the dead in this world, even if it has to make more people dead to complete the job.

You can find the novel both in e-book and trade paperback form at Amazon, Barnes and Noble:

Here’s a sneak peak inside the novel:

I skipped my last class and headed straight over to Nathan’s place.  I knew he wasn’t going to be up yet, but I wanted to be there when he woke.  Plus I wanted to see how his ‘guest’ was getting on.

I let myself in through the front door and started to head upstairs when I heard noises coming from down in the cellar.  My first thought was, ‘He’s up already!  Good, now he can tell me what the hell happened.’  So I made a beeline for the door in the kitchen that I’d seen him disappear through this morning.

As soon as I opened it the sounds were much louder. Someone was moving down there, but something wasn’t right. It didn’t sound like him moving around.  Immediately, I had a bad feeling and my first impulse was to leave and get help.  But then I remembered Nathan was down there, and he would be vulnerable at this time of day.

My protective instincts must’ve kicked in, because I raced down the stairs and spotted my godfather lying on a table in the center of the room.  Standing over him was the guy from last night armed with a stake and hammer.

He had his back to me, so I took advantage of the situation and jumped him.

As expected, I took him by surprise and the stake wound up hitting the light hanging over the table.  Out of the corner of my eye I could see our shadows as he tried to fight me off.  A part of me kind of wished someone had been filming them, it looked pretty cool-not that I was enjoying myself at the time.

For a guy who’d nearly died the night before, he was pretty lively and strong.  He wound up slamming me against the wall by launching himself backwards.  I always wondered how characters in movies manage to stay on someone when that happened, and now I know.  It’s called an adrenaline rush with good reason.  This clown was trying to kill someone dear to me, and I wasn’t about to give up.

Unfortunately, he was bigger and outweighed me by a lot.  After I hung on when he slammed me against the wall, he tried a new tactic.  He fell backwards on purpose and landed right on top of me, hard!  I think I must’ve blacked out, because the next thing I knew he had me tied to a chair and was staring straight into my eyes.

“I’m sorry, kid.  I didn’t want to hurt you, but you’re obviously under his control,” he tells me.  “But don’t worry, I’m gonna dust this blood-sucker and you’ll be all right.  We both will.  Now just sit tight and let me do what’s gotta be done, okay?”

I couldn’t believe it.  Mr. Break-In was trying to be a hero.  It was almost funny in a way.  But I still couldn’t let him kill Nathan.  “No, you don’t understand.  He’s not a monster!” I tell him.  “He’s a good man.  I don’t know what happened between you two last night, but he didn’t kill you.  He spared you and did everything he could to keep you alive!”

As soon as the words leave my lips, I realize all of this is true.  Nathan could’ve ignored me when I begged him to stop.  Instead he told me to get the blood I’d brought and started giving the guy a couple of transfusions.  How could I…

“That’s what he’s been telling you, kid,” the guy yells.  “He’s inside your head, just like he’s been in mine.  I can still feel him, but I’m able to fight back.  And once he’s dead, you’ll understand.  You’ll be normal again.”

Before I can say anything else he whirls around and rams the stake right into Nathan’s chest.

My godfather doesn’t cry out.  Nor does he gasp, or open his eyes, the way vampyres supposedly do in movies or books.  But all those writers did get one thing right; he starts to crack and crumble right before my eyes.

For an instant I can’t speak.  Time has slowed down as I see the cracking spread all over his skin.  Soon his chest caves in on itself, with the sound of ancient paper crackling and breaking.    Then his hands start to implode and turn into fine particles.  Within moments there’s nothing left except his clothes and dust.

I can’t remember exactly what happened next but I think I screamed and tried going after the guy with the stake.  I kept trying to undo the ropes around my wrists and ankles, while cursing my head off at him.

The jerk just stares at me in complete shock and keeps trying to tell me that we’re both free.

But I don’t listen.  Instead, I just lose it.  Finally, he gives up and shouts something about sending the cops and a straightjacket for me and takes off.   My mouth is still running with every curse word it knows, while tears are streaming down my face.  I’m not ashamed to admit that I was crying.  I’d just lost someone as dear as my parents and little brother.

I cried and screamed myself hoarse for God knows how long before I finally got control of myself.  When I did, my only thought was getting out of there.  I was sure Dad or Dr. Jack would be coming by sooner or later, but I couldn’t wait that long.

Once again I went after the ropes, but Ass-Hat knew his stuff; they weren’t loosening at all.  As I struggled I noticed the chair was a bit wobbly.  It occurred to me that if the chair broke, I might find it easier to free myself.  So I tried rocking and shifting, hoping something would break.  Eventually, something did – namely the two legs on the left side.

From my point of view, all I saw was the world tilting sideways slowly, then rapidly.  I braced myself for a hard landing but instead I hit soft dirt, much to my relief. Then I noticed I was still going down.  My shoulder was sinking into the dirt as if it were quicksand.  Panic took hold as I struggled desperately to free myself from the chair, but only the two legs had broken.  My hands and body were still firmly tied to it.  I was going to sink into the floor, and there was nothing I could do.

The soil was just starting to touch my cheek when a hand grabbed my shoulder… from inside the ground!

Recently, I tried to get some new reviews for my two novels on Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and Smashwords.  I even offered free Read-2-Review copies of the books to anyone who wanted to do a review.  The results… not a single bite.

I couldn’t believe it.  Giving away “FREE” copies of a book in exchange for an honest review is usually one of the very best methods known to get some reviews for a book.  But I wasn’t getting any takers.  In fact I actually heard back from a few people who had read the books and loved them.  Yet when I asked if they would be kind enough to leave a review this is what I kept hearing from a number of them..

“I love to read, but I don’t know what to say in if someone asks me to review their book…”

Does this sound familiar to anyone else out there?  If it does, don’t be embarrassed.  A lot of people feel that way.  Some don’t know what to put down because they see all these other reviews that are like several paragraphs long and go into great detail about the structure of the story, the plot, etc.  Or perhaps you just don’t have a lot of time to sit down and think, much less write up a big ole review.

These are all valid excuses.  But not every review has to be several paragraphs long.  Even the simplest review can be just two or three sentences.  And of course you’ll be asked to give a star rating usually on a 1-5 scale, with 1 being (why did I bother) and 5 being (dear God I want to read more like this).

While you may feel like you cannot convey all you want to say in just a couple of sentences, but that rating and a few words can make a world of difference as to whether that book becomes a hit or not.  Every review added to a book can make it a sensation that spreads across the nation and even the oceans.  Most book buyers want to know what the book is about, which is the writer’s responsibility to convey in their synopsis.  But buyers also want to know what other people thought of the book, especially since we’re all so spoiled for choice these days thanks to Indie Authors, Kindle, Nook and other e-reader devices.

20-30 reviews, even if half or more of them are just a couple of sentences long can help push that book you just finished and fell in love with, to great heights.  The more reviews the better for the author and the book.  Amazon and other places base a book’s popularity through a logarithmic system that is based on the number of reviews a book is given.  If the book has a lot of reviews and ratings they’ll suggest the book to other buyers with similar interests creating more sales.

But if a book only has a handful of reviews, they won’t do much with it.  It’s not the length of the review but how many and how favorable they are.  So if you really want to see an author or a book get the recognition you think it deserves, please go ahead and leave a rating and just a couple of sentences.  The power to make or break an author and their works is in your hands.

So please, support your favorite authors and books by leaving reviews as well as spreading the word about them throughout your networks.  You could be helping someone become the next Stephen King or JK Rowling.  Remember, without readers, we authors are nothing.

Thanks so much for tuning in and please keep writing.

****REVIEWS NEEDED ON SMASHWORDS****

I’m looking for honest reviews of my 2nd paranormal/mystery novel “The Ship” for my Smashwords site. Recently there’s been a lot of traffic over there but no sales. Part of the problem may be the fact that there’s been only one review done on the book at Smashwords.
Multiple reviews spurs more sales, so if anyone is interested in doing a review I’m willing to supply you with a free e-copy of the book from the Smashwords site.

For those not familiar with the story here’s the blurb from the back cover of the book:

Cassandra Elliott is a billionaire heiress, who has just come out of the closet. She’s also a powerful psychic who has seen incredible and terrifying things. In fact, just two weeks ago, she and her girlfriend Julie Cloudfoot, survived a horrific battle alongside their two friends Alex Hill and Veronica Ross. They faced a being from a parallel reality where evolution took a much different course than in this version of Earth.

As a result of that encounter the two of them have come to Santa Cruz to bury one of their own as well as to see if their knew relationship will work out.

While taking a surfing class Cassie finds herself under attack and barely escapes with her life. But this is only the beginning. Whatever attacked her left a mark on her leg and now she is experiencing terrifying visions and senses the approach of something hiding in the fog. A legendary ghost ship is coming for her. However this is no ordinary nightmare of the sea. This vessel is alive and wants to make her a part of it, literally…
